Dictionary

Welcome to the dictionary page.

Here, you will find a collection of definitions for key terms related to equality, diversity and inclusion. Understanding the language and concepts used in discussions about equality, diversity, and inclusion is an important step in promoting these values and creating a more inclusive society.

It can be challenging to navigate vocabulary within the diversity and inclusion sphere. Educating ourselves about language and vocabulary (and not being afraid to get it wrong) can help empower people to have more conversations about diversity and inclusion and to ensure that they are being inclusive.

It’s important to remember that language is constantly evolving, and what may be considered acceptable language in one context may not be in another. There are many different approaches to terminology and there’s no conclusive definition for many phrases. It is important to also respect personal choices and feelings and adjust your language accordingly.

Our dictionary is designed to provide information on a wide range of terms, from basic concepts like “equality” and “diversity” to more specialised terms like “intersectionality” and “microaggressions.”

Here is a summary of the different definitions used and links to third-party resources/definitions and guides (as there is a lot of great work and resources out there already) as well as our own definitions, tools and resources.

Whether you are new to these topics or looking to deepen your understanding, we hope that our dictionary will be a helpful resource.

We encourage you to browse through our entries and use them as a starting point for learning more about these important issues.
